~Chennai sees a growth of 24% in hiring for January 2019 as compared to January 2018~
New Delhi, xxth February, 2019: The Naukri JobSpeak Index for January 2019 at (2,251), marked an overall rise 15% increase in hiring activity from January 2018 (1,951).
In the month of January 2019, hiring in Chennai was up by 24%, likewise Bangalore was up by 27%, Pune by 22% and Hyderabad by 18%. Overall hiring for IT-Software industry noted a significant rise in the hiring activity, growing by 36% in comparison to January 2018. Also, Auto/Auto Ancillary industry saw an increase in hiring with a growth rate of 17%. Hiring in IT-Software and HR functional area recorded a year-on-year rise of 35% and 30% respectively.

The rise in recruitment for January has been notable across sectors such as IT, Auto and FMCG. The functional areas such as HR, IT – Hardware, and Sales/BD also have observed a rise in recruitment and this trend is likely to continue in the upcoming months.”

Hiring Trends – Industry Wise
Hiring activity in Chennai for the month of January 2019 saw a rise in IT-Software (45%), IT-Hardware (28%), Auto/Auto Ancillary (36%), BFSI (37%), BPO (17%) and FMCG (2%). However, hiring in Hotel industry saw a dip of 16%.
Hiring Trends – Functional Area Wise
An increase in the demand for jobs in various functional areas was observed in the month of January 2019 for Chennai. The verticals that witnessed an increase in hiring activity year-on-year were IT-Software (43%), BPO (17%), Accounts (3%) and Banking (3%).

Hiring Trends – Experience Wise
Hiring for a talent of 4-7 years of experience grew by 32% whereas recruitment for entry-level jobs which falls in the experience band of 0-3 years witnessed a rise of 24% in January 2019 for Chennai. Recruitment activity for mid-management roles of 8-12 years of experience grew by 31%, while senior management roles of 13-16 years of experience recorded a 18% rise in hiring. Leadership roles with experience band of 16+ years also increased by 18% in the recruitment activity.
Hiring Trends – City Wise
Demand for talent grew across metropolitan cities. Some of the emerging trends observed in the cities are elaborated below –
- Pune: Overall hiring activity in Pune grew by 22%. Industries such as Auto (49%), BPO (9%) and IT-Software (38%) clocked in a high hiring trend for the city. The experience band of 0-3 years experienced a rise in recruitment activity of 27% in January 2019 vs January 2018.
- Mumbai: Hiring activity for the city increased by 10%. Industries that observed a robust rise in hiring were IT-Software (30%) and FMCG (30%). The experience band of 8 to 12 years recorded a 16% increase in hiring activity in the city.
- Bangalore: Hiring activity for the city increased by 27%. Hiring in IT- Software industry saw a growth rate of 53%. The experience band which observed maximum hiring activity was between 4 to 7 years with a growth rate of 36%.
The Naukri JobSpeak is a monthly Index which calculates and records hiring activity based on the job listings on Naukri.com website month on month. The objective of Naukri JobSpeak is to measure the hiring activities in various industries and the data is compiled of companies which are registered on the platform and reflects gross hiring (includes replacement hiring). July 2008 is taken to be the base with a score of 1,000 and the subsequent monthly index is compared with the data for July 2008. The jobs analyzed for the monthly Index are qualified on the basis of white collar, urban, belonging to organized corporate sector jobs with a main focus on service industries. The report shows hiring trends across industry sectors, geography, experience level and functional areas.
